I'm not sure if this is a core, or the largest chert scraper/knife I've ever seen (it has 1 "sharpened" edge), but either way, is that not just the most gorgeous chunk of chert?!? (I've found about 6 of similar size. All heavily worked, with 1 seeming knife/scraper edge and "hand conforming" shapes)

As always, if anyone has any ideas/opinions/knowledge, please share!

How do you go about searching for something like that? I'm very interested. I live in an area that was loaded with native American settlements, but what do you look for to decide where to search? Once years ago I ran into a guy metal detecting and he showed me raised areas of the field where he believed huts used to be. Does that sound like something you'd target?

I sat in the middle of a river/creek digging my hands around in the 1-3 ft of sand that sits above the hard mud bottom and I pull up anything bigger than a quarter. I just happened upon a bunch of crazy Native American projectile points and tools. :)
