these reds could it be the hematite?

the inside is quartz so what about the surface?

I would venture a guess that the reddish cortex, is a result of environmental conditions acting on the trace elements within the quartz,likely iron yes, chemical elements in the environment where it was sourced,also play a big part,just like oxygen and what not,are there other quartz cobbles from same area that have similar coloration?

this stone comes from a long past, so i couldn't remember if there was any like this, but i would say this one was a rare to me with anywhere:) thank you for the consideration and ideas about the stone. highly appreciated.
