Almost a week now into MD'ing......Hooked

11 quarters
26 dimes
46 pennies
5 nickles
one key and an old logo from a 1978 trophy

Been MD'ing 5 days now, trying to learn my Ace 250, thinking about trying somewhere other than Tot Lots. Still no luck with the older coins, any suggestions as to where to start out looking?
Thanks for any and all help.

Mike K

Enjoy it!

Soon you will be discovering quite a few things, not just coins.
Like local history, what bugs live in the ground, what bugs like to get
in your ear, what the native birds are, how the weather changes, local trees
and plants, where people go for picnics, and where road crews are breaking
up the asphalt! ;D

Like my friend says here... "keep the passion high!" Welcome to treasure net and the addictive world of detecting. :)

For older coins you need to be in older places. Undisturbed places... old lawns and unused parks. After you feel really comfortable with that 250 you'll need to think about the historic areas around you... and go from there. Lots of folks here asking the same question - and it always comes down to research on your part.

Good luck... keep on posting!

Welcome to TreasureNet and the great hobby of metal detecting! As far as where to go for older coins, I would suggest going to your local library, ask if they have very old county maps or plat maps, they will show you where old houses were that aren't there now, also check out local history books. It takes a little leg work but well worth it.

Good Hunting,
Steve

Yeah, the addiction only gets worse. I've been using the 250 for a few months and learn more every time I'm out. Your own yard is a great training ground. I'm going over areas I hunted when I first started and finding wheats that I missed earlier. It takes a while to learn what the 250 is telling you. Keep it up and look forward to seeing your finds here.

Welcome to TNET Mike.Tot lots can be challenging with all of the trashmas well as in parks. I am pretty new at this too with the ACE 250. But many people are able to pull great coins from parks as they become experienced with their machines. I started out at a baseball park and pulled a lot of pull tops as most people do. I was able to move to more virgin, trash free sites where it gets exciting. :thumbsup:Good luck.
