That might be fun to do. Any particular habitat they seem to prefer better?

Very cool.
Around here, the berry's start to form making it an easy giveaway in the forest.
The ginseng found around here I've heard, is the most potent in the world.
The Chinese buy as much as they can get.
Most people don't know that an average sized plant can be hundreds of years old!

I'm glad you reminded me about them.
We have them here on the property.

Quality ginseng grows in very low-light conditions. It used to be grown commercial here in Oregon under Douglas-fir stands in the 1930-40 era. Still find them sometimes. At that price, might be worth starting to grow again!

It grows in heavily wooded mature forest. the under growth is usually sparse ferns and moss are abundant. Here we can't sell over Sea's without a fish and wildlife permit.
but with a harvesters permit we can dig and with a dealers license we can sell, most the people that buy here are Chinese Americans. eBay is a hot spot. Ive gotten up to 48.00 an ounce. Ours is potent as well, i nibble on very small amounts every year

Great...and probably plenty if it hasn't been harvested out.
If you find red berries please plant them shallow, back in the hole it's dug from to assure future crops.

I knew a man who made more digging it on his vacation than he did all year on his job.

That is simply amazing!!! So, if you harvested 100 lbs., you'd score a cool $50,000.

I'd be digging till my arms fell off. Then, after the harvest, you have the entire rest of the year for detecting

Quick question...

If you actually harvested say 50 or 100 lbs., can you get rid of it. Meaning, is there that big of a market for it? I'm guessing you have to sell it fast before it goes bad.

Hmmmm. You learn something new everyday :sign13: With those prices, who needs to grow pot :laughing7:

Yes you can sell the ginseng. It has to be dried, therefore increasing the shelf life. All ginseng in illinois has to be sold by march 1St of the following year.. someone has to grow the other... :tongue3:
