Don't know about enough about Andersonville but on the topic of Civil War POW camps:

Anyone out there ever do any research into Camp Douglas? I know it resulted in the largest mass grave in the country's history, some 6,000 Rebs, and that does not include the suspected wagonloads of bodies that were sent from Douglas to the local medical universities.

My cursory study indicates none of the prisoners there were allowed to keep their clothing or effects. That may indicate that somewhere in Chicagoland there could be literally thousands of CSA buckles and tens of thousands of buttons piled up in a hole, were they not sent off for recycling. I am aware of one story of a local who had a case of buckles and plates as curios from a familial hand-me-down but these were lost to time as well.

My great great grandfather was a prisoner of war there. He was captured twice. He survived this horrendous place. He served as a Sgt. in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, USA.

Then he was both lucky and tough as nails. My reading of it so far tends to tell of conditions as bad as any experienced during the war.

Andersonville Prison

Hi,
If you are interested in Andersonville Prison history, here are some url's that you might enjoy visiting and reading! I found these url's (6) when doing my family history on my father's side. I even found a cousin that had located a picture of my great great grandfather that served in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry. You are right, he was lucky, but no doubt, tough! I love reading about the civil war era, and it really becomes real when you learn of your ancestors that fought and died during this time. Enjoy!
