I just dug one like it today at the home place of my wifes grandmother. She raised several boys that worked the coal mines and I assume the tag I have is from the coal mines like yours.
Can anyone tell me if this is a coal miner's, animal or tool tag.

With that high number my "guess" would be tool tag.

Did it come on the chain? Size looks like one I found, but mine had a much lower number. Are you in an area that had a mine that put that many men under at one time? Isn't it almost as much fun trying to figure out some of our finds as it was getting them?

Tool tag is my guess. I have seen many luggage tags that look like that also. A multi use tag Cool find!!!
