Every Spring a Great Blue Heron, somehow gets to my pond, thru overhanging tree branches and 2012 is no different, almost like clockwork in early March this guy or a buddy shows up to feed on the frogs and other little creatures in the pond. I took several photos, all thru a double paned glass window, so not as crisp as could be.

First photo shot thru the window with no zoom, approx 140 feet or so to the bird.

Second photo of the Heron getting ready to strike at a target in the pond, used approx 12x Optical Zoom

Third photo was using max Optical with addition Digital zoom to get as close as possible.

SPRING is here........

I am sure we have year round Blue Herons, but just like Bald Eagles and other birds, the ones further north of here tend to migrate to more open waters. I know at the big dam just below the border of Pa in Md, has a killer amount of both Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons that winter over there and that is not too far from here, perhaps couple hour drive. But I do believe this one hangs around for awhile and then moves on further north, since we rarely see one in the summer here on the property.

Those are beautiful birds, I jumped one out of the same creek twice today, it must have been a 'good spot' for a good meal.

I love herons, we have the grey heron and the bittern, but they are flighty buggers, really hard to get near for a good pic. You did well mate :icon_thumleft:
