I thought that L4S would try to get ahead of me again today. I had a 1.5 hour hunt today to try to keep pace. I failed in my silver quest, but I got another first for me -- a V nickel. I know for some its not too exciting, but it is another first for me, so please, don't condescend the V.

I do have a question? What if anything do you use on nickels to clean them. I just went soap and water for now.

Cleaned using Mark's sauce method. I tried the bee's wax, but couldn't get it right, so I put some mineral oil on it and will let it dry. Thanks for all the suggestions to every one. Mr. Senior's method looks spicy, so I like that. I will try that on some buff's. In person, I can see most of Liberty on the band, but the V is really weak; E Pluribus Unum legible on reverse and strong.

Plus a nice cobalt blue Noxzema jar (maybe from the 40's? I looked up and saw it was started in 1914). Now I have something to put all my 2010 Wheaties in!

Sweet finds. Nothing wrong with a V. Just means there's some old silver around to be found, just still hiding. You'll get it. Just pound that area to oblivian.

I always use salt and vinegar, and watch it carefully. Works fast, and you don't want to leave it in too long, or the salt starts eating away at it. Once I'm done, I rinse it off with baking soda and water. Mark soaks his in Worcheshtire sauce for about 6 hours I believe.

I would take finding a few V nickels over a Rosie any day! Let's see it after you clean it up.

Great V

As far as cleaning. . . soak in warm Worcestershire (Lea & Perrin's) until
the "red" disappears. It helps to use a toothbrush on it about every hour
or so to speed up the process. Sometimes I just leave the nickel in the
sauce overnight. It usually takes 4 to 6 hours depending on the condition.

After it looks the way you want, put some melted bees wax on it and then
buff with a paper towel.

I tried L4S' thing earlier and when it started taking the black patina off and showing a lot of red, I got nervous and stopped it. I just now put it in French's Worcestershire sauce (hope F's works). Anyway, off to work, will check when I get home around 11 PM. Hopefully a good result.

Congrats on the first!!!

Like the others said, there's nothing wrong with a V - well maybe the process of cleaning them is a pain, but I still remember the thrill of my first one.

Niiiice, pretty V.

Came out great and as one who can't photograph a blue sky in broad daylight, I know they often look better than the pic suggests.

Awesome job, I love it when a V pops up!!!! I only cleaned 1 (my very 1st buffalo) and I hated the way it looked so ever since then I just wash the dirt off and leave them alone. :icon_pirat:
