I had about an hour before Kick off time on Sunday afternoon so I ran to a "green Acres" preserved open space by my house. I found this about 20 minutes in. The planchet seems a little thinner than most of my Large Cents, but I can see a profile facing right. It measures 27.78mm. I didnt get my scale yet so I have to wait it out. The reverse is in much worse shape.

It may be a late 1795-1804 variety, or a colonial. I may never know for sure.

This is the third "slug" this year.

I can see enough of the head to tell that it appears to be a liberty cap large cent. That would date it at either 1793, 1794, 1795 or 1796

Waseeker: I thought the same thing. Liberty cap, Plain edge. It looks a little better in person. Although I do not yet own a scale, I know it is too light to be 1793 or 1794. Most likely 1795 or 1796.

I am determined to find ONE in readable condition.

Neil, regardless of what the weights say in Red Book , that is for new coins, and ours usually have wear and tear making them lighter, so here are the weights of my Liberty Caps, most are in very good condition, my 1795 is worn but very readable.

1795 - 10.29 grams
1796 - 10.33 grams
1796 - 9.96 grams
1796 - 10.36 grams

Now the 1794's are much heavier

1794 - 12.46 grams
1794 - 12.43 grams
1794 - 12.76 grams
1794 - 12.48 grams

Very good on getting a scale that reads in grains, since that is how Colonials are listed and judged by. Also, have you tried an Aluminum Foil rubbing of the coin?
By your photo, I also think it is a Liberty Cap, but photos can play tricks on your eyes! ::)

Bring the coin to the club meeting Thursday night if you are attending, I plan on being there.

Yah finding thoses "disks" is so frustrating because you want to identify them. Still a cool find. What do you use to measure the diameter? I need to get one so that I can try to identify some of my "disks"

Yep, the plain edge narrows it down to either 1795 or 1796.

good job
