Decided late Thursday to take Friday off and do another road trip. I had been thinking about doing this ever since I thought I had uncovered some semi-virgin territory during my last road trip a few weeks ago...

So I took a different route to get to where I had ended my last road trip with hopes of continuing from there.

First, I had some coin to dump so I went a little out of my way to stop by a dump bank and decided to stop by a few banks in that town (skipped most of them as I go there semi-frequently as it is..few times a year)

Bank #1
$44 in loose halves from the coin machine (1976-S Clad proof)
$17 in Eisenhower dollars
17 Eisenhower Dollars (1971, 1971-D(2), 1972-D(6), 1974-D(2), 1976-D Variety 2(2), 1977-D(2), 1978-D(2))

Bank #2
Cashed in my rejects to get more cash.
Found the following coins in the machine (reject slot and just inside) where you dump the coins.)
1 Canadian Dime (1999)
4 Foreign (Austria, 1 Euro (2002), Ireland, 50 Euro Cents (2002), Ireland, 10 Euro Cents (2002, 2007))

Bank #3
Someone was here yesterday....we have 1 half dollar....hmmm...left it there

Bank #4
$33.50 in half dollars from the coin machine...skunk

Bank #5
Coin machine bag had a $300 in it, but they had just shipped one out a couple weeks ago, so it sounded suspiciously like someone's dump...decided to leave it as I had no place to dump coins for quite some time.

I skipped the remaining banks in this town and drove on to where my trip was originally planned to begin
Banks #6, 7, 8, 9
All said the same thing....someone was just here recently looking....grr....nada to pickup including in the coin machines

Bank #10
$8 in loose half dollars, also said someone was just here recently. When I inquired about the coin machine, they said there was $100 in there, but it didn't fill until $1000....oh well..

Bank #11
I had done well at in the past, so I was hopeful. They had $138 in the coin machine (and it was a new type from the one they had the last time I was there). So although I probably could have filled it up and bought it back, I asked if I could just exchange out a coin or two if I saw something I wanted. The teller said sure (was less hassle since they were sounding hesitant about my other request.) Well, there wasn't much in the bag. A quick scan netted me 1 - 1964-D and 1 - 1968-D. Well, at least its a start and the town had been picked over so I can't complain too much.

Bank #12
Tried to get the coin machine bag, but they spotted pennies in it so they said they needed to recalibrate the machine and rerun everything first before I could fill it and buy it back. Took my name and number....$400+ in a $500 bag so I'll go back in a week or two.
Ended up getting 10 machine rolls and $5.50 in loose halves.
Found 1 - 40% Kennedy in the machine rolls (1967)

Bank #13
nada

Bank #14
Picked up $1300 in hand rolled halves....I suspected these may have been a dump, but handrolled halves are easily searched while driving for me and I had a lot of road in front of me before my next dump spot and only a handful of banks between them so I decided to take em all. I also asked about the bag in the coin machine, but got a response that essentially said we can't tell you anything about anything. I asked about filling it and buying it back if there was a lot in it....."sorry, can't tell you that"....finally I just gave up and left was my 130 rolls.... note: all 130 rolls were skunks...not a single keeper found while edge searching and driving.

Bank #15
nada

Bank #16
$4.50 in loose halves...skunk But they did mention that they had just shipped $400 to the main office which I would be driving by later.

Bank #17
Filled the coin machine bag to get the $38.50 in it (filled at $100). skunk

Bank #18
I called ahead as this bank was out of the way and would have cost me 15-20 minutes to check....no halves...glad I called.

Bank #19
had $80 and said someone was just in yesterday and looked through all of them...#$%#$....still following someone....or found somenoe else's territory...sounded like this person came by all the time. Just left them there.

Bank #20
Picked up $400 in hand rolled halves
3 - 40% Kennedy (1967(2), 1969-D)

Also had a nickel sandwiched in one roll (free $0.05)...lol

Also picked up 4 - $50 bags of pennies I saw sitting in the back.

Bank #21
Picked up $70 in hand rolled halves...skunk
Also found out they never had anyone asking for them...okay finally in "virgin?" territory.

Bank #22
2 Eisenhower Dollars (1976 Variety 2(2))
They also had 10 rolls of handrolled halves, but wanted to charge me a fee to take them.... I politely declined to pay the extra $1 and left them there.

Finally got to where I had left off my last road trip and since there was branch of my dump bank here, I stopped briefly to finish opening the remaining handrolled halves I had picked up so far to allow more cash if i needed it.

Bank #23
Cashed in all the halves I had picked up to that point....$2001.10....hmm....I think I was shorted $0.90.....then again I think one of my rolls only had 18 coins, so unless there was extras elsewhere....I may have gained compared to what I brought in....

Bank #24
$220 in hand rolled halves
2 - 40% Kennedy (1968-D(2))

I tried to buy the coin machine bag as well, but after some internal discussion, they seemed to just ignore the question and not really answer it....I finally gave up and just accepted what I got.

Bank #25
$34 in loose halves from the coin machine.
2 - 40% Kennedy (1965(2))

Bank #26
10 rolls of machine rolled half dollars and 1 -$50 bag of pennies
I wish I had opened these rolls immediately, but instead I just put them aside since it wasn't far to the next bank. If I had paid attention, there was a 40% on the end of one of them. I got the impression there were more rolls in the back, but the teller was only selling me $100 worth.
It was good $100 (I opened them at home)
2 - 90% Kennedy (1964(2))
10 - 40% Kennedy(1966, 1967(5), 1968-D(4))

If I had spotted the one on the end immediately I would have opened them, and realized I should offer to pay a fee and buy whatever they have left. Unfortunately, this bank is too far away to justify driving there just in case they have some left from the same batch. If I knew someone in the area, I would tell them to go check it out.

Bank #27
picked up a $50 bag of pennies....and was asked if I was Doug...apparently Doug commonly buys bags of coins from them. I wonder if Doug is on here..... :)

Bank #28
Picked up 2 more $50 bags of pennies

Bank #29
10 rolls of machine rolled half dollars
1 - $100 bag of nickels
1 -$50 bag of pennies

I immediately spotted silver on the end of three rolls, so I asked if there were any more at all in the vault. Unfortnately, that is all they had. Different branch of bank #26, wonder if they are from the same batch...similar results.
1 Franklin (1961-D)
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964-D)
9 - 40% Kennedy (1965, 1966(2), 1967(3), 1968-D(3))

Bank #30
Used $31.50 to fill up the half dollar coin machine bag to $500...spotted a walker on top and a 1964 on a couple handfuls in the bag and decided to wait until I got home.
Turns out those were the only 2 90% in the bag, but you won't see me complaining as the walker was one I had never found before. :)
1 Walking Liberty (1946-D)
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964)
17 - 40% Kennedy (1966(2), 1967(11), 1968-D(3), 1969-D(1))
3 NIFC Kennedy (2008-P(2), 2008-D)
1 Canadian 2-Dollar (1996)

2 Quarters

Still have yet to date search/error search this bag, may be a couple more keepers that I missed.

Bank #31
I got there at 1 minute after 5 PM....closed....BOO!!!! This was in my virgin territory area too...

Bank #32
nada

Bank #33
nada

Bank #34
$9 in loose half dollars...skunk

Bank #35
Just barely made it to this bank before 6 PM. Happened to be a dump bank so I brought in the remainder of my reject halves I had been carrying around all day to be used to fill up coin counter bags if necessary (hadn't ended up using any this trip).
The $1000 half dollar bag filled up after $200, but this branch had just changed their policy about selling bags off the coin machine a couple weeks ago....no matter who hard I tried to get that bag...no luck..Grrrrrr!!!!!!

Ended up getting a couple halves out of the teller's tray...
1 - 90% Kennedy (1964-D) 1 - 40% Kennedy (1965)

Can only imagine what was in that bag....thought I heard silver too.....oh well...

So net totals for the day:
$3075.00 in half dollars searched
1 Walker
1 Franklin
6 - 90% Kennedy
46 - 40% Kennedy
1 Proof
3 NIFC Kennedy
1 Canadian 2-Dollar coin

and about $800 left to date/error search (should be no silver left).

as well as
1 - $100 bag of nickels
9 - $50 bags of pennies
left to search

only about half as good as the last trip, but still respectable and enough to cover gas.

Sounds like a well planned out road trip. With results better than what you would have gotten from ordering 6 boxes. Congrats

Nice road trip. I don't know how you talk those tellers in to letting you buy the bags from the coin counter because I have a hard time getting them to sell me those bags. most times they just say NO, we can't do that.

It depends on bank policy and the type of coin machine they have.

Some banks have a policy that they can't sell loose coins. They have to be rolled or at least verified. Policy is policy, they aren't likely to change policy just for you, so its not worth fighting on this one as you just won't win (at least not by talking to only the tellers). I have had some banks who used to sell bags who won't any more. Many times it is because they need to balance exactly and they can't tell exactly how many coins are in each bag so they just won't sell them (that is the typical reason I get at least).

Some coin machines can clear an individual bag if they just remove it, some can't (or at least so I am told by the tellers who may just not know how to do it). For those that can't clear an individual bag, the only way to buy it is to fill the bag up first and buy it back which means having enough halves with you to do that. I usually won't bother filling it up and buying it back unless the bag is at least half way full or its in an area I am not likely to be in again for a long time and as such will miss out on whatever is in it. On this particular trip I had about $900 in halves with me strictly for the purpose of filling up coin machine bags to buy back. Turns out I didn't need them as I was able to just use the ones I was searching as I was going to fill up the couple bags I bought.

And if I have tried my two or three methods of getting them to sell me the bag, and they still won't sell. I keep a smile on face and say more or less no problem and move on as usually I don't have accounts at their banks anyway which I rarely get asked about.

I got told "NO!" at least a few times on this trip as well as every other trip I take. It's just part of the game. It took me some time to figure out a good way to approach tellers and how to phrase the questions I ask in order to get what I want. I don't know if it has really made a difference or not, but my results at doing it are a lot better than they were when I first started trying.

Thanks GMan, I think I need to work on my sells pitch. I have been able to buy a few bags off the coin counter, but not that many.

umm... I think you mean towns, and yes I use google maps and http://www.usabancshares.com/

The other site tells you other towns close that also have banks (and how far away each town is). Although its listings are not perfect and I believe a bit dated so its best to confirm on google first.

I think I ended up somewhere around 250 miles roundtrip.

Went through the $100 in nickels and the first $50 in pennies.

The nickels had
1 Buffalo (1924)
1 - 1943-S War Nickel
32 other pre-1960 Jefferson (1939, 1940(2), 1940-D, 1941, 1941-S Small S(3), 1946(2), 1947, 1948-D(3), 1949, 1951(3), 1952, 1953-D(2), 1954-D(3), 1956-D(2), 1957-D, 1958-D(2), 1959-D(3))

1 - 1965 SMS nickel.

3 Canadian (1971, 1985, 1990)

But the penny bag I decided deserved its own thread which can be found here.
