Was hiking at one of my favorite spots w/ the dog and along the way there is a house site that had a nice size home from 1840 until 1917 which was part of a larger theiving mill community from 1840's until just before WW1. On the approach to where the fireplace and parts of the foundation still remain I eye balled this barely poking through the mud and pulled it out. It's very heavy and seems obvious to me, but would like 2nd opinions. 19th century axe-head? Thanks in advance. In digging lots of complete axes, and broken ones I have noticed that some have a distinct difference in the surface. Looking at the side of the axe its pitted more towards the back than the blade. I am thinking that the axes that look like this have been heat treated for strength and sharpening. I dug one broken one this fall that's very close to yours and the homestead would date to the 1870'S or later.
I gave you a like also for the title of your post, ad I had no idea what the heck the era referred to, so I read up on it and thank you for that as I learnt something new today. Now I'm going digging.
