I just found this at the base of a 100-year-old Oak tree. I know it's not that old but I have no idea what size and when it was used. It sure is big.

......That's what she said.

could be a .50 Browning Machine Gun (.50 BMG) or 12.7×99mm NATO. Hard to know without the size needs measurement looks like 1923 which it could be 50 cal either that or 3006 hard to tell with picture the 50 cal Enter service officially in 1921, the round is based on a greatly scaled-up .30-06 cartridge. So 1923 and the size it looks like I would say 50 Cal US military 1923. If it is big as it looks if not then 3006 US Military

Not so strange...a lot of parks around the country were used as training sites. Ft Howard Park in MD had villages built on it to train troops during the Vietnam war. Used to find 5.56 blank cases there all the time as a kid, long before I got int metal detecting.

Those 50 cals turn up in some of the oddest places, but a lot of them were brought back as souvenirs and I remember the army navy store having boxes of them for a few cents each when I was young.

SL by the way is St Louis arsenal
