Hi there,

I found this bone/horn while out ā€œbeach combingā€, it seems to be old given the coloration.

Iā€™m trying to ding out if it is human or animal. The area it was found (Dinorwic Lake-Dryden Ontario) was flooded in the 1900ā€™s and the item was found at the base of an eroded clay bank (20-25ā€™ high). Historically the area was used by First Nations and I have found copper culture in the area and flint arrowheads.

My thoughts are that it is possibly part of a "floating rib bone" or horn. The fat end is a little hollow and then solid down to the tip. the item is flat and slightly tapered front edge (curved) to the back (straight edge)

really trying to get a ball park on age and what it came from?

I tried to attach the pics...see how it goes

Can you show some clearer pictures of the edges and the tip? Does it look polished? It may have been gnawed on by rodents. Bone Tools/Bone Awls, which this may be, are usually highly polished from use. When they show the roughness your piece does they are almost always gnawed on.

Here are a few of mine for you to compare and see what they should look like.

hey thanks for the reply "Grim". I will upload more/better pics when I get home. I was thinking the pitting might be from water rolling over time, never thought abut rodents!
