Doesn't look American to me. We don't put little crowns on our eagles.

Austrian? Maybe from 1880's to early 1900's?

Might be, Ridley, although most of the Austrian eagles are double-headed, like the Russian ones.

Poland is a possibility, as they do have crowned, single-head eagles; however, the wings are usually raised.

I believe that some of the old German city-states used crowned eagles as well.

Austrian eagles are double-headed before World War 1.

After the split of Austria-Hungary, they went to the single head with crown. But the claws usually have broken shackles and a hammer and a sickle.

You never know what an American GI might bring back. I have an early 19th century pistol taken from a Belgian civilian in WWII.
