AA if it could be opal wet it with water and look at it from different angles should see some other colors.

I'm thinking calcite.

A fine-grained fibrous variety of quartz, silicon dioxide. The individual fibers that compose the mineral aggregate usually are visible only under the microscope. Subvarieties of chalcedony recognized on the basis of color differences, some valued since ancient times as semiprecious gem materials, include carnelian (translucent, deep flesh red to clear red in color), sard (orange-brown to reddish-brown), and chrysoprase (apple green). Chalcedony occurs as crusts with a rounded, mammillary, or botryoidal surface and as a major constituent of nodular and bedded cherts. The hardness is 6.5–7 on Mohs scale. The specific gavity is 2.57–2.64.

Crusts of chalcedony generally are composed of fairly distinct layers concentric to the surface. Agate is a common and important type of chalcedony in which successive layers differ markedly in color and degree of translucency. In the most common kind of agate the layers are curved and concentric to the shape of the cavity in which the material formed. See also Agate.

Eu-citizen Its amazing how there can be so many gems,agate and just plain rocks laying around. My wifes uncle told me he found crude rubies in the Sierra mountains but i think he was pulling my chain

Try to scratch the specimen with a knife. Orthoclase has a hardness of 6 a knif has 5.5.

I would say that is most likely chalcedony which has agatized with what looks like Jasper, possibly. Although I can't really tell.

Do you have quartz and pyrite? (or one of them?)

Try to scratch them if you have one of them....

And please take a close up of the mineral.

Its opal in matrix, how do I know I have lots of it I am a share holder in an opal mine. Nice chunk. Its name is potch opal.

You mean the knife does not scratch it? Opal is around the same hardness as glass 5.5 to 6 on Mohs.

TR: I have had opals etc from Australia it is similar to "white opal".
