Anyone know how to safely clean Civil War buttons?

I wanted to eventually over winter create a shadow box of my finds. I was wondering if there was a safe way to clean some buttons or just leave them alone. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok I feel dumb sometimes. If I would have scrolled down a little further on the initial forum I would have seen Buckleboy's post about cleaning buttons.
