It could be for propane. Looks just like a house that burned in a past forest fire.

It could be for propane. Looks just like a house that burned in a past forest fire.

Delivery of the amount of propane to pipe a house unlikely in such an isolated area and even if it was, it would not date to an older building.

Just a guess but back when I was stationed in the UK they used to run pipes through the wall that would run behind or under the fireplace. If done right, the water would turn to steam then run through the pipes and cool back into water. The process would heat the house and as the hot water traveled through the house over and over again.
