I just recently moved to south Georgia, Valdosta area. I'm wondering if there is anything of significance to look for. I know there should be old US siler etc.. but did anything historical go down here? I'm fairly certain that the civil war never cam this far south.

I'm coming from overseas where I would routinely find Roman and Greek coins dating back thousands of years. I know that I have to curb my expectations quite a bit but I'm hoping that there may be something sweet in the honey pot.

The Spanish and the French were wandering around down there from the early 1500's on. Most early significant settlements were on major rivers or natural harbors. Good luck.

Done some digging there years ago, and spent a whole day detecting around "Doc" Holiday's old home only to discover later that it had been moved from it's original site which was now the town dump. So might save you a dig there, as we didn't turn up anything old. Valdosta has been pounded, but I'm sure there are a few oldies still in hiding, best of luck.

I have a friend just south of Atlanta. He finds Civil War artifacts all the time.
I enjoyed watching "Gone With The Wind" when I was a kid.

Thanks for the info guys. Maybe I can score some of that Spanish or French silver! How sweet that would be!

The Old Spanish Trail runs west from St. Augustine and crosses north FL just south of you. Can you say reale or cob? Gary
