Dad and I used to pickup trash along thousands of miles of Arizona highway each year. We did the 60 from Ellsworth in East Mesa to Superior and the road from Coyote Junction to Florence. We also did the Hunt Highway and Beeline Highway from Ft. MdDowell to the 4 Peaks turn off. We were out there every day for at least ten years. Anyway one time we had stopped at the rest stop at the Queen Valley turnoff and decided to explore out in the desert. We got about fifty yards out off of the south side of the road when these steel balls appeared just resting on the surface. We picked them up and took them home.
