Thats it?? geez Arkansas is almost deserted :dontknow: maybe I should move there:occasion14:

Compared to a lot of states Arkansas is sparsely populated. With the exception of Little Rock-North Little Rock,Fayetteville,West Memphis and maybe Texarkana it,s mostly small towns in the 1000 t0 6000 Population range with lots of farm and river bottom land in the Southern half and Eastern portions and foothills and Mountains in the North West. That,s a generalization of course but accurate. The entire Pop. of the state is somewhere in the 3 Mil.plus range, not even as much as NYC.

Thats a good thing, your lucky. My dad was from Pine Bluff and i had a good friend from Russelville, Never explorer your state and its on my list. Gotta do it soon i am older than 96% of our population.
But you guys have no lions or bears or wolves.....humm..wonder if i could bring some with me so i would feel at home<smile>

aint that the truth. Goes by faster each day. I think thats because after spending a lifetime learning about life we begin enjoying it so much there just isn't enough hours in a day. We have the coyotes also and elk, mule deer, no moose but on the other side of the cascades we have pronghorn antelope. You have whitetail deer right?

yep. Yeah, all areas without lions end up with serious deer issues. Lions keep the herd healthy and stay away from humans. For the most part. Heres one sunning on my daughter property. Shge took the px with her cell from the 2nd floor so its not good. Her cat is also in the picture checking out the lion. A once in several liftimes kind of pix.

Man,that,s cool.We get the occasional lion sighting but they,re believed to be escaped pets.
Well you know Ca. used to have a $200 bounty on lions and when no bounties were claimed for decades they decided to list the lion as extinct in Ca. This got the people attention and they demanded lions be given full protection and it was over whelming approved by the voters. During the battle to gain protection one of the activists formed the Mountain Lion Foundation and with donations and the help of activists it was discovered that ca. still had lions they just didn't chose to be visible. Ca. today has the best lion pop in the nation but habitat loss is cutting into their population unfortunately. There is a biologist and researcher that wrote a book on what he has discovered using dna analysis and eye witness account of killed eastern lions. The few that have been killed all on the roads he claims are young males looking for new territory and mates and are all related to western lions genetically so he claimed eastern lions are extinct I'm not sold on this. What i believe is any area with serious deer population problems dosent have lions but any area with a healthy deer pop does have lions. I base my conclusion upon my experiences in ca. Now what this biologist says about young makes is correct that are not strong enough to make territory already claimed by older males so they go exploring. The smallest lion range recorded is 200 square miles in Big sur Ca. and the largest documented is in Utah at 1200 square miles. Lion tend not to allow other lions in their territory and range size is determined by the availability of game which is primarily deer.
So, to cut myself off I conclude if you have a balanced deer pop you do in fact have a resident lion pop but if you don't its time to lobby for the reintroduction of lions.

Here i just found that book mentioned above written by Mark Elbroch titled, The Cougar Conundrum, a good read. I think you can get it from the MLF https://mountainlion.org/

I really don,t have any thing against lions but I don,t care to have them reintroduced in Arkansas.Too many problems, with the protection given them comes all sorts of demands to close areas they inhabit, ban hunting in those areas, and even if they do reinhabit to the extent they become a nuisance the protection never goes away.Years ago the Ar game and fish decided to reintroduce alligators. Now the damn things are every where,no fear of man.I don,t care to kill either, lions or gators,or bears, they,ve repopulated too and become a nuisance.I,ll be glad to send California all the lions we can find.

They are different than alligators they don't like people are smart and you won't see them. I felt the same as you regaURDING WOLVES CAUSE I HAVE SEEN WHAT PAcks of dogs can do. sORRY FOR CAP LOCK KEY And didn't want them introduced but it happened and wolves have turned out to be like the lions they stay away from people and so far they have cause no issues. Knock on wood.

Way late? Nah! You,ve arrived!:laughing7:
Haha, exactly. Never can be too late for the party. Remember there’s always an after party😂 dang, I think more Arkansans need to get together and do some hunting. I’ve had little luck so far on finding others with the same passion as mine for it

The after party is the best, right?

I have so many interests that being sold out to one particular activity is impossible for me; hence ADHD in my username. BUT, I rarely halfass anything when I'm in it. So I may not MD every free moment, but those that I do are pretty serious times.

I’m the same way. I get serious about certain things and may not be as focused as I should be on some of the smaller things but metal detecting is one of them things I really use my head on and spend as much time doing it, while I have time to do it. If I have a spot that’s just opened up and I’m not busy then I’m on it, if there’s a campsite or a skirmish site that I can hunt I’ll usually wait for the weekend and have my brother go with me so we can cover more ground

human antiquities act of 1976< year?
?
This thread has reminded me of something that happened to me. I believe this law is still on the books but no longer enforced.

In 1979 I was on the edge of the Mokolome wilderness on a jeep trail with a friend and he was playing around with his detector to see what was there. He found a small old piece of tin and a couple of square nails and as we were examining then a little guy came out of the woods saying we were under arrest demanding to see our drivers licenses. Dan and I looked at each other with a you got to be kidding look on our faces and complied. This guy was not armed in an area at least ten miles in any direction from the nearest human dwelling with a radio that did not work he was out of range and he was threatening two good sized construction workers.....he had to be crazy to do that in our eyes. If we had been doing anything illegal we could have disposed of this little whimp with little effort but we just humored him. He did work for the feds and did write us tickets which we laughed about afterwards untill we found out that we were in violation of the human antiquities act and would have to appear before a federal magistrates court judge. Dan and I went to court which was only to be arranged and setting bail amounts. We were enjoying this at first untill the case in front of us began. This person whom was crippled and sucking oxygen with a full time nurse was there to attempt to have his bail reduced from three million dollars to an amount his mother could aford to post. The judge asked the amount she was willing to put up and was informs only about one million if she mortgaged her properties. At this point we were starting to get a little concerned. Anyway to shorten this story the judge refused to reduce the bail because the mother was also currently under indictment by the court and all funds, properties wer seized by the feds. Dad and I decided to seek legal advice after this experience fortunately we were not required to post and bail. Under this act any human artifact over fifty years old on federal land could not be moved without first obtaining a permit to do so failure to do so was punishable with up to life imprisonment and fines. I won't recount the actual court proceedings of our case just to say we actually won and only because the judge felt the human antiquities act was not clear and needed refining

I used to be in LE and often was out of touch and alone, though armed. I always considered myself careful in those situations. This feller did not, apparently take his personal safety as seriously as he did his job duties. Thanks for not feeding him to the bears, though a whipping may have done him some good...probably not.

Dan and I found the initial contack humorous we had no idea using his dectector to find and old rusty piece of tin and a couple of square nails could in any way be illegal. He was not armed all he had was a back pack and if he could have called for backup it would have taken them a good bit of time to get to us and by that time we would have been long gone. Both of us were pretty strong from all the heavy work we did everyday. When he first started his demands the thoughts that ran through my head is this little skinny guy must be incredibly stupid wearing britches way way to big for him and a smile came to my face. We joked about this all the way home but that first day in court certainly changed our attitudes. If i had to do it over again i think I would have just laughed and just left him standing there.
