I fixed your link. It looks like either slag or natural float copper.

I have to agree. Most likely slag but then again it depends on where you were hunting. There are still some big ol chunks of copper out there, even though it is the fastest depleting metal on earth.
Nice digs!!!

I dig a lot of "old copper culture" artifacts every year, it looks to me to be a piece of float copper!

bubbled on one side smooth(er) on the other. isnt that consistant with the white willow fired forgings? could this be a very early example? rudimentry forging thru softening and pounding, not casting per se?

could it be prehistoric ? just guessing, I have no expertise!

In what state did you find this? To me it looks too large and regular to be natural float, but it may be worked float. I've dug a lot of ancient primitive slag (in Bolivia) and I don't believe it is slag, as slag is most often stratified with impurities. It seems most likely (to me) to be a final product of primitive smelting or pounding. (*under 'treasure legends" ("Inca treasure") I posted a few pics of smelted copper/bronze which had been smelted and formed into plates which look very much like your relic/material. I'll try to dig out a few more to photograph. Again though, it would help to know the geographic area where you found your piece.)

" top"
notice has an edge along the whole top.

"bottom"
notice it has a broader spot on the bottom maybe so it would rest on the handle if an axe

why wouldnt the sharper edge continue all the way around?
