Are those some glass jar lids you found? I found two of those my self. Do you know about how old they are?

1 bad,
not really that up on porcelain lid history. Do know that " Boydes" took over "Masons" patents in the early 1860's; In 1871 "Boydes" merged with "Consolidated".
Do a bit more digging in the area you found the two inserts, could be a dump a foot or so down.

Often find them in the bottle dumps I hunt, I do it because I love getting out, and finding and digging dumps is interesting, never know what will come up. Also understand that collectors are more into the zinc canning jar lids that held the porcelain inserts, not just the porcelain.

Jake,
I know you have found a bunch of porcelain inserts. These were the usual suspects, Boydes, Consolidated, no name ;no new ones for my collection.

both of you have a good un

Jake,

Not sure, but I think the old ones would heat the porcelain and bottles, that would help create the vacuum, (which helped preserve the food), when the zinc lids were tightened. Just an early canning method.
