Re: 3 Day Hunt

You are definitely a true treasure hunter.
Hunting in that low tide has got to wear on your legs.
Very nice finds. ;D

Re: 3 Day Hunt

Yeah,, that area looks to be a real pain to hunt in, but you found some goodies,,, WTG!!!
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Re: 3 Day Hunt

Most of those bullets are late 19th century. From the earliest rifles (.450cal -.577cal), Enfield, Snider, martini-henry. So must be some other objects of that date. Nice pieces of history :)

The smooth sided Pritchett bullets are for the muzzle loading Enfield (famous Empire weapon used all over the world). The first British rifled bullets after the smooth ball (musket balls). Still sticking them down the barrell until they experimented with the breach loading Snider.

The grooved bullets are for the Snider, although some grooved bullets were tested in the muzzle loading Enfields.

The tall thinner greyer ones are for the Martinin-henry

Have any of the smooth sided bullets got the red clay insert or just concaved. If you look in the base of these they may have numbers & letters?

If you do some research, I bet you have an old Firing Range, possibly aiming at the water for safety, although they weren't all that concerned in those days. The one I found wasn't even known about by the landowners, locals, & historians. You probably have a militia range - very interesting. Although I am running ahead of myself & they could be there for other reasons.

Re: 3 Day Hunt

Thanks for the info Crusader Yes it did used to be a firing range they used to stand on the sea wall and shoot out into the mud bank during world war 2

If they were still using it in the 2nd World War then it may have been used for nearly 100 years. See if you can dig out some history on the start of the range, the local military historians will be interested in your finds.

I used to dig Victorian bottles as a kid & still have kept the better ones, however I have not idea on this bottle. Only that my hunch would be 50 years old.

Re: 3 Day Hunt

I was just looking about to put the fishing weights that i found in the weights box when i looked closer at one of the small round weights it has no hole for the tackle to go through could this be a musket ball?

Can't see the scale but looks like a musket ball or pistol shot

Re: 3 Day Hunt (UPDATE)

Make sure you check out the sea wall as well...any coins, buttons, dropped bullets, or other military relics will be there waiting for you.

I was going to say a similar thing. Check out the firing points. These would be at the 200 yards, 400 yards & even 800 yard point. Depending on the size of the range (500-1000 yards). They would be marked every 100 yards & firing could take place at any one of these points. Also think about where they may have camped over night, rested & taken lunch breaks.
