I live in Athens, but I haven't yet. I didn't see any local ordinances against it so long as they aren't state parks. I've tried contacting schools, but usually don't get a return call or email. You can check here to see if I missed any local law:

I noticed that they are doing grading work at the old Chase street school,probably would have been a good place to hunt.

It may still be depending on if they are removing or adding material. If they are adding not to much, you still might be able to see 6" below the old surface. Just have to dig down to the coins at 10". LOL.
