The property owner of a homestead I'm currently detecting asked me if I could confirm if this is an authentic Native American Gorget.
He told me that he found it 30 years ago while walking a trail in the woods in Southern Ontario, just east of Toronto.

It looks to be made of slate and measures 1 1/4" wide x 3 5/8" long.
The holes look to be drilled on an angle and in the area where I've circled, it appears that a couple of attempts were made to drill the hole.

Hoping the experts here can give me an idea of the age, type of stone and if possible, what native tribe may have made this piece.

Thanks,
Dave

No expert here but I know the holes look correct (biconical drilled) and I believe the material is slate which is also correct for many gorgets.

Thanks to everyone who posted for sharing your thoughts, I'll pass this information back to the homeowner.

This gentleman is a collector of bits and pieces of things that he's found creek walking or while digging in his garden.
Every time I come over to detect he always has something new to show me, which is usually followed by a barrage of questions about what it might be. :laughing7:

Here's a view of his c1840 house and property... thanks again for your help.
Dave
