A friend of mine found this axe head recently while exploring a local river and asked me to post for info. We figured it was utilitarian but that's about it, any info would be great.

Nice find. I think it would be a 3/4 grooved axe. A theory I support is a primary use was for breaking holes in ice. The reason so many are found along rivers and lakes. Kevin
Nice one, was it found in one of the central states? Looks a lot like a "Missouri axe", lots of variants of them, found in Missouri and neighboring states. Regardless, great day at the river for your friend!
Here's you link with some info on Axes. Yours is a 3/4 Grooved Axe and from the Middle to Late Archaic period around 4000 to 2500 BC. What state was it found in?
It was found in northern Illinois. We have not had much rain here in a few weeks witch all the streams and rivers are low and good for hunting. Guess he was out back at a stream that runs through his property and spotted it in the water while collecting clam shells. Thanks for the help everyone.
Wow! I have received a lot of views from this post. Thanks for the support everbody. I would of posted it under " todays finds" but I didn't find it and can not speak for the man, just helping a friend out.
