I'm starting to like nickels more and more. Picked up $100, roughly half cwr half mwr. Found a number of goodies, including my first key date Jefferson, a 1939 S. Wish it was in better shape, but it's a hole-filler for me. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501721702.978003.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501721766.651089.jpg

I also found this 54 S with some metal on the reverse. It looks to me like it was external metal that has been dropped onto the coin, but am I seeing cuds instead? ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501721951.913118.jpg

The extra metal is most prominent over the P, L, and S of PLURIBUS, but some is also visible under AMERICA.

The obverse does not appear to have any abnormalities: ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1501722105.764361.jpg

Your feedback is always appreciated, thanks for looking, and HH

I think it's just metal folded over from a long abused life. You see that quite a bit on dryer coins.

I think you're right about the foldover, but if that is the case, I find it strange that the coin shows such minimal damage, even on the rim. I've seen plenty of coins that have taken far more obvious abuse and didn't have what I'm seeing here, but much stranger things have happened in the realm of CRHing

Congrats, nickels can be a lot of fun to search. I think the '54-S has die chips and cracks. It doesn't look like PMD to me. Cool find. That's a somewhat common find up through the early '60's on nickels.
