I spent most of the day doubling the size of the hole to this Roman rubbish pit. It turned out to be the biggest hole I have dug, & bottomed out on gravel at about 5.5ft from the surface.
Although I only got 1 good pot today, it was still a blast.
As well as the usual bones I got a few Cow horns as well!
No metal found other than the nails & lead.:sadsmiley:

Beef, mutton, wild boar, oysters and imported wine all consumed off of Samian tableware, sounds like your neighbourhood was the place to be back in Roman times.
Looks like a fun alternative to a days detecting.

Another cool find.
Not sure I'd have the patience for that kind of hunting.

You don't need patience, just blisters on your blisters. As Dad was not hunting this weekend, it was TV or this, I know my choice everytime.

I'm stunned to see a trash pit that old, the oldest I have seen here is from around 1900 and to me that is ancient! Good luck in there, I seems like you will find some nice pottery.
