Bald Hill: a forgotten battle site: Atlanta, Georgia
Unfortunately, as people travel to and fro around Atlanta they are moving across sacred land for history buffs particularly Civil War buffs. Once the city was rebuilt after Sherman’s March to the Sea the sprawl simply began to cover up battle sites without a thought to future implications. Many people visit Atlanta hoping to view land where various skirmishes took place only to discover the sites simply do not exist.
One such site is Bald Hill, a substantial rise east of the city. All that remains is a lone historical marker that is hard to catch as you zoom past on Moreland Avenue. Bald Hill was located where Moreland Avenue is today along Interstate 20. When the expressway was being constructed in the 50s and 60s the hill was leveled taking much of the real estate where some very fierce fighting took place in July, 1864.
Following the battle, Bald Hill earned a new name in honor of the Union leader, Mortimer D. Leggett. Northern accounts of the battle refer to Leggett’s Hill while many still refer to the events as the Battle of Bald Hill. It was a vicious battle where many of the men were in face to face combat. At one point a wounded Union commander, Manning Force, was hit in the face and was bleeding terribly. He called for the flag and his aide brought him a white piece of cloth. He felt there was no option at that point but to surrender, but Force corrected the aide’s mistake and told him he wanted the American flag. There was no surrender and the Confederates lost the hill.
Unfortunately, Atlanta lost the landmark to progress along with any buildings that would been in the area during the battle.
