it depends.........some soil conditions can keep coins from sinking very deeply at all (clay,rocky,tightly grown together roots),in other soil types coins sink rapidly (grassy sandy soil).add into the fray thawing and freezing, decomposing leaves, erosion and you can see that its hard to nail it down to a science.ive dug clad at 8" and i dug a 1781 spanish half reale at 1". there really is no universal formula.
