How true. Bending a tree, and having stay that way takes some time. I would think more often than not that a bent tree could have already been there, due to Mother Nature, rather than someone spending what months at least to make one. Especially in that doing so would have been a beacon that something odd was going on. I mean you go bumbling through the woods and see a tree being bent down, rope(s) tied to it to hold it in place till the bend takes, and you aren't going to think there's something funny going on? Or peak your interest in the the site? Really, if you are making markers you want them as inconspicuous as possible. Not some marker with a path worn to it from you having to go back and forth so you can keep adjusting the lines to keep the tree bent in the right direction.

Like Reb mentioned trees had a lot of easier uses for markers with a couple of axe swings, some selective cutting, or a little whittling with a knife.
