For US stamps, you may wish to invest a few bucks in a used "Official Blackbook Price Guide to United States Postage Stamps". My 2008 guide is over 600 pages and cost less than $9 when new.

I'd venture a guess that stamp values have not appreciated since 2008; perhaps to the contrary.

Many libraries will get the books you need through an inter-library loan.

This means that they can borrow the book from another library, sometimes in another state, have it shipped to your local library, and you can check it out.

Its hard to beat a scotts specialized catalog! You may want to check out E-bay & see what stamps are going for there, the market is slow but you can get an idea if ya know what you have.
