If you do BIG CITY coin hunting and are used to two legged wolfpacks, muggers, panhandlers, gangs, being shot at, bad dogs, bad cops, and all the other predatory critters who inhabit the inner city, then this is a tip for you that could improve your old coin take. Do a web search for HUD homes & pull up your state and the city you wish to hunt in. Then just pull up the pictures available for the homes listed, many are 50 - 70 years old, unoccupied, and from my own experience in Atlanta, the yards have silver in them. Mark them on a map & develop a route to visit them, have backup sites figured out ahead of time - old parks or schools in the same area in case the neighborhoods look too bad. If the parks and schools look like hood hangouts - move on & find another spot! Try to hunt in the mornings, and move out and be gone by 9:00 A.M. Always take a partner, drive a raggedy vehicle, and dress poor but tough. I grew up in Atlanta and know my way around here - where I'm relatively safe & where and when I'm in danger. I've put back alot of silver doing this and you can too if you are used to urban hunting, but be careful. I had someone empty an automatic pistol at me in broad daylight once - NOT FUN! GOOD LUCK & PLEASE BE SAFE!!!

Thanks Rambo....oh I mean Slingshot for the Big City tips. The Hud approach was a great idea.

However, after reading your post I have decided to leave all that silver in the bad neighborhoods to you. When I was young I used to carry a large Bowie knive for digging when I detected in such areas. However, I stopped when I realized I was simply not having fun in that type of environment.

That guy that emptied his automatic at you was probably after that barber quarter you just dug up.

Good Luck (and I do really mean it)
George

A little quote from a writer ;-)

"Modern Atlanta is what a quarter million Southerners died to prevent."
John Shelton Reed

Modern Little Rock is similar.
Good Luck

DUMBO might be a better description of these detector forays. I can hear the silver coins beckoning me to retrieve them, I just hope I don't collect lead in me, if you know what I mean. Atlanta is a tough place in about a 5 mile radius around the Capital. I just want anybody interested in trying this to be aware of the danger involved. I don't want to be the cause of someone getting hurt trying this out, the old silver just isn't worth it!

I know the feeling well-- there are old parks in Los Angeles that I know have good stuff waiting to be found. It won't be by me, though-- there is far less risk in other digs.
