I found this up in my field. Judging by its size and the caulks my current guess is it's from one of the draft horses they used when logging old growth redwoods. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1426020386.942924.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1426020414.259491.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1426020431.829840.jpg

And I also dug up this mystery tool which I am guessing is a big old plumb bob. It was probably a foot deep in the middle of the forest which is a little strange. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1426020512.909392.jpg

I still enjoy digging a big ole piece of iron now and again. That will make a nice display.

Maybe the plumb bob was part of a surveyor's kit? Any famous surveying in the area?

Hmmmm I don't know about famous surveying. Though I would imagine the forests were surveyed pretty heavily back when all the old growth was logged.

You often survey property lines before logging. Even today. You do not want to log your neighbor.

Plumb bob is def a surveyor's. I had one just like it in the 70s. A steel point screwed into the bottom and the top screwed off so you could tie an interior knot in your string. But a foot deep?? Puzzling!
