Hello Tnet friends, first of all...Happy Mother’s Day to all you mamas out there! All last week I was itching to get out but didn’t have a decent place in mind, but that changed when my diggin friend Randy called Saturday morning, as he had done his homework, locating a site that showed a house on the 1875 map. Permission secured, we ventured out. Well short of the 500 yards we needed to walk to get to the site, we started getting tones, and were finding mostly old bullets. Only 20 minutes in, I dug a Largie (no date yet) and Randy upped the game, digging two. Weird spot-3 Largies, no other coins. Headed to the house site and it wasn’t hard to find... brick, pottery, colored glass, and lots of iron. We dug a few wheaties, bunches of buttons, axe and Randy popped his third Largie, a beautiful 1853. Then he dug a large, intact crotal bell, complete with dinger. Today: we get an early start as heavy rain is on the forecast. The same site started getting stingey, only giving up some wheats and another complete crotal bell. Taking a lunch break, Randy brought the 1875 map up and spotted a house site in the adjacent field. Off we go and again-boom; glass, brick, pottery.. lots of buttons came out before my neighbor John popped a sharp 1850 Largie.. and then another, an 1831. Randy snagged a cool token and then I got that sharp, loud 90, 91 signal. I could tell it was shallow and found it with my Carrot. Picking at the dirt revealed a BIG, shiny rim. I called the guys over and proceeded to carefully pop it out. Coveted in dirt, I didn’t think it was a coin...no reeded edge. Then Randy reminded me that Capped Bust had no edge reeding. Spritzed it off and saw the eagle and the 50C. The edge was stamped with “half dollar”, and beautiful Lady Liberty with her cap on. Still dirty and I’m not touching it. So sorry for the rambling... but I love this hobby, and I really love finding things like this. To be honest, this coin isn’t even on my bucket list, that’s how unattainable I thought it was and I thought I’d find a gold coin before finding one of these. Thanks so much for looking... Ddf Scotty.

Double wow ... a Capped Bust Half and other great finds - well done ! :occasion14:

Thank you E Trac Ohio... yep... what a shocker! If you run out of fresh ground there in eastern Oh., hit me up we’ll put you on some old mid Ohio dirt! Always fun with a group... Ddf.

Congratulations Scotty.

I know your excitement. This hobby will pick the absolutely strangest times, places and items to reveal. I've felt it many, many times in my long "career". i.e. a nice old place that would give up nothing but clad, not even a Wheatie!! Then, there was a very modern soccer park that gave up my 1812 50 cent piece, 10 feet in front of a goal and only 4 inches deep!!!

But a day like you had there? Once or twice in a lifetime. The treasures are *everywhere*. (Sometimes I think everywhere but wherever I am).

You benefited from the one hard fast rule. The research. Its what hedges the bet! Sadly, I've gotten too old (sic lazy) to do proper research anymore. I just keep walkin' using the blind squirrel method.

Remember, take lots and lots of pics of the good days. One day, it might be the only thing you have left.

(Soooooo.....when will that helicopter be showing up to fly me in? :tongue3: )
Thank you Whadi! We’ve both had somewhat of a “dry” spell (because it’s been too wet, oh the irony!)... and this stoopid virus isn’t helping lol, but what a shocker. The number of keeper coins, tokens and artifacts actually outnumbered the trash targets at this last spot...amazing. Thx very much for looking. Ddf.

Oh almost forgot... chopper be landing there Saturday morning! Pack your lunch!

Simply amazing finds- that Capped half looks like it's in tremendous condition - Congrats!

Thx JeffiInMass, yes the old girl is in better condition than what I originally thought, I’m afraid to even run warm water over it..lol. Thx for looking, Ddf.

Holy living ****, congrats!!!

That is one outstanding hunt!!!! I am usually happy if I bring home a glass stopper. Thanks for posting that!!! What a beautiful half!!! I think you will be going back to that place if you are not there right now!!!

Yes, she is a beautiful girl lol... My neighbor John eye-balled the glass stopper and didn’t initially grasp the significance of it, I yelled “find the bottle!”. Lol... absolutely LOVE that champagne color. Thx for looking, Ddf.

I have been wanting to dig a Capped Bust Half for a long time. I see quite a few of these posted, many more than Capped Bust Quarters, but I never see them at the bottom of my holes :icon_scratch: :dontknow:

Congrats on a great find!

That's a hunt there!!

BOOM! Yes it was a hunt, and we all agreed that these spots have not been hunted due to the scads of great targets just beneath the surface. If it has been hunted, they sure missed some great targets! Thx for looking! Ddf.

Outstanding hunts DDF ! Those Large Cents and your Half, would make anyone's day. Like that token also.

Thanks Trezurehunter! We pulled six Large Cents out of those sites, and Randy found an 1853 that was absolutely beautiful... looked like a new coin with that awesome, emerald green patina. I think he forgot to send the pic of that one but I may update if he does. Thx for looking, Ddf.

Dang, that half is going to be hard to beat, congratulations on that one. hopefully I can start getting out more to give it a shot anyway :)

Thanks Bryan1776...lol yes that one done upped the ante! I primarily hunt fields, and Randy has really stepped the research up! He does the research, I drive... a great system lol... thx for looking, Ddf.

Nice finds. The 1850 LC is nice and in decent shape for an old copper.

Thank you, WVExplorer... Randy didn’t send me the pic of his 1853 he dug Saturday, THAT unit was stunning! Looked mint state with that beautiful emerald green patina. I gotta try to get it up in the post, thx for looking, Ddf.

Love that coin! Dream find!

Congrats on a great find!

For whatever reason, the US mint was producing way more half dollars than quarters at the time but like you said probably not much easier to find a half vs a quarter. Most will find neither

Holy living ****, congrats!!!

Lol...thanks Joe Dirt! So I talked to Randy today and he just informed me that he uncovered a THIRD house in that area not far from the two we’ve been hunting... Cmon Saturday!! Ddf

Great old coin shooting! :occasion14:

Congrats on the dreamy find! That half would have put my blood pressure through the roof haha!
