HEY GUYS AND GALS

Out for a hunt on the salt shores as the tides are full now .... hunted on land all last week ..tried new spots with no success. So decided to head to the shore.

Pulled this pewter button outta the mud....... was very surprised to see it Octagon shaped.

I have absolutely no idea what is on it ....but is in good shape !!

Also no idea on what the copper piece is either.

Please help me out with an ID on these items if you can. !!!!!

Let me put my two cents in on the octagonal "button". CUFFLINK!! I have found a number of them, some with the loop attached and have seen a number of them posted as a linked pair. They were popular in the 1750s to 1780s, then the oval cufflinks came into vogue.

But did your linked ones have a regular loop shank, or the usual low profile shank? ...that is the question. If you have two linked, and they have a regular loop shank, that is the game changer.

Totally amazing that they stand the test of time in that kinda environment...230-250 years is a long time.

PS....I like your disclaimer !!

Guess it depends on your definition of rare. :)

Hmmmmm....tough crowd...

Ok....is it found often in Canada or is it more of a European item ?

PS..I,m pretty happy with any item like this.....rare is always nice but just being mine now is much better !!

I don't think the type of loop makes any difference. Here are a couple pictures of cufflink backs I took a long time ago (I have found quite a few since). I see a number here that have a loop shank.

OK, The shank side sure is different than any of the Octagonal ones I have, I may have to agree with IP on this one, that perhaps more used as a button, rather than a linked pair as in cufflinks. With that said, it would be nice if it was part of a pair, so the other half with link might be out there for you.

I find it strange that we see so many of these cufflink size octagonal "buttons", but we don't seem to see octagonal coat/cloak size "buttons". If I was a betting man, I would still bet cufflink!!

Of course my disclaimer still applies :laughing7:

You might be able to narrow it down by using a good magnifying glass. Looking at this photo (which appears to be right side up), to the upper left, one of the petals 'seems' to be a banner with writing on it. I can't see it real well, but it appears to be NUP. Or, I'm just seeing things. (lol)

Not a tough crowd at all... just impossible to answer. But if you want a straight answer based on my opinion I will gladly provide one. :)

It's not a good enough find to consider the rarity, or lack there of. Now that's the tough crown answer. :laughing7: (but still the truth)

hehe..... you know I value your opinions...tell it like it is ...that is the best policy 98% of the time...other 2% is for when we need to tell them little white lies for the greater good.:tongue3:

Rick, maybe some more will come out of the woodwork, but from my experience you just don't see larger octagonal colonial buttons. Only the smaller ones, many with links attached, which is why I believe they all are cufflinks.

Beautiful button IP. I guess there are a few large octagonals out there. But...how many buttons have you dug over the years and how many were large octagonal?
