I looked on craigslist free section today to find an ad for free black sand close to where I live. This is what it said:

the kind of black sand you could find on a Hawaiian beach and all free to you.

Could this contain granules of gold that I've heard so much of on this forum?

Is it worth my time even checking?

How do I even check to see if there is gold in it?

Any advice would be helpful!

I'll copy my previous reply here:

Jamin, it would depend much on the source of the original
material. I see you're in Tacoma, so it's possible the original
material could have come from one of the local watershed
areas known to hold gold.

First thing I would do is haul-ass down there and ask for
a 3 gal pail full (very heavy stuff). Take that and run it
on a concentrator of some type, best would be a miler
table, or second option would be a blue bowl or spiral
concentrator. Then you can get some idea of how much
super-fine gold is present. A Miller table can hold fines down
to about #200 mesh (or better).

IF there is enough gold present to warrant processing all the
material, then I'd head back down asap and get to making a new
friend of the plant manager (or whoever is in charge). There could
be a fortune sitting there, or it could be a bust.

So, IMO it's absolutely worth checking out, and you shouldn't
waste any time lest another prospector gets in there ahead of you.
If it's worth working, just let me know where the place is and I'll
have 'em deliver me a truck/pup full; just enough to keep me busy
this winter...8-)

Edit:I just read the ad for the material you're asking about, and they
do mention the source. For processing, a unit called a "Gold Cube" would
be the thing to have (about $479 retail for the 4 stack). The black sand
they're speaking of is likely to hold some very fine gold, and may very
well be worth working. No guarantee's, but certainly worth checking out at
your first opportunity!

If it wasn't all the way to Tacoma I'd be on my way there now!)
