Bottle "CAP", old marble, hinges and more

Back to the convent. On the grounds directly around the building. Found an old marble (?) Looks like made of wood. Couple hinges and other junk.....I mean relics. A quarter, 3 dimes, 1 zinc, 1 wheat (1918). Oldest wheat to date. The bottle "cap" is really neat, never seen one like that before.

At another stop, a tot lot, only found 2 quarters, a dime and a key. And the bug jar with magnifying glass on top.

I've never seen a bottle cap like that before. Any idea on it's origin? Looks like a baseball hat :o

I was wondering if that is where the name "bottle cap" came from. I'll try to find some info on it.

Re: Bottle "CAP", old marble, hinges and more

A few years ago our club went on a mini hunt to a scout camp in Metamora Michigan. We dug up a few caps just like yours, they were rusted worse than yours. But upon cleaning mine a little with a teefbrush and soapy water, I saw some letters that looked like they may have come from a Coke beverage. Our theory on theese caps was that they were experimental, and they were using the scouts as guinea pigs. I could see that you just used your thumbs to push the caps off. I think it failed because they were actually harder to get off than just using the church key. I have searched many bottle cap sites, and could never find any info on these caps. Hope someone finds more info than I could ;D

Green1, I figure if a 1918 wheat is there, silver is not far away. Besides, it's been a convent for at least 57 years. Some crosses are bound to show up too. Before that it was a home for children. Orphanage if you will. The marble I found was smaller than a dime, after cleaning looks like clay, maybe.

Notgittinenny, I gently washed it with a teefbrush ;D and it has red on it, but couldn't make out the white letter(s). I couldn't find anything on it yesterday either, I'll keep trying.

Coat it with some kind of clearcoat spray, as mine has been deteriorating to the point that the "bill" is almost off of the main part of the cap. Just make sure that all the moisture is dried before coating it. I think that we may find out that these caps in any condition are highly collectible. Hence the reason for for not finding many.

Re: Bottle "CAP", old marble, hinges and more

Notgit, I sent an email to a guy named Rich, at Worldbottlecaps.com. He claims to have 45,000 caps in his collection. I'm waiting for a response. If anyone would know, it seems he would. I'll post ASAP.

toomany, I think the site I went to was a guy that collected all kinds of caps from all over the world, he had about 500 pictures online, and I didn't see, in any of his coke caps, any that looked like ours.

Re: Bottle "CAP", old marble, hinges and more

I sent an email out to this guy, here's his reply.

Brian,

The cap shown is known by several different names such as Flip Cap, Flip Top, Lift Top or Zzip cap. These caps weren't around long as during transit bottles would shift around and would actually open themselves. There were several different brands that started to use them before finding out about the problems with them. Hope that helps.

Thanks,
