Hello fellow hunters. I found this yesterday at a fishing camp site that goes back to about 1900 but most of my datable finds only go back to the 1940's. I know that it is a Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks insignia but I cannot find this particular buckle on the net.

Two questions:
1) How old is it?
2) How do I clean it better? It has some nice relief and color on it that I don't want to mung-up by over-cleaning.

Thanks for the view and good luck out there. C9

One way to clean silver that is pretty effective is to lay a piece of tin foil in a bowl, add your piece of silver and then cover it with baking soda and a bit of salt. Then pour boiling water over it and let it sit till the water cools. You should then be able to run the tarnish off.

I make sterling jewelry and my favorite product for cleaning heavily tarnished silver is called "Tarn-X" Used to be sold at Woolworth stores, now available at Lowes and I am sure a lot of other places. It is a dip or rub it on, rub it off liquid and fast acting.
