December 2017 - It was 8am when I drove to the recycling center to drop off some aluminum scrap. After unloading I asked to walk around maybe to find a valuable scrap item and I happen to find this. I was told it was made of complete brass and they were going to place it in a presser in an hour. The plate was too interesting to leave, so I decided to buy it from them. Brass was 2 dollars per pound at the time and payed 26 dollars. The plate weighs 13 lbs and has a 42 in diameter.
Later, I looked to see if the plate was worth somthing other than it’s brass content. On etsy. com, I found a 1950s brass plate with the price of 1200 dollars. I polished the plate and found a struck date 1952 on the back. The brass plate is a 1952 chinese handcrafted decorative plate with the symbol of luck in the center.

Nice save from the scrapyard and welcome to Treasurenet!

Your piece is very large as far as plates, chargers, or trays go. I wouldn't hold on to that Etsy listing as the gospel for that price though. I'd value it at around 1/3 of that at retail, tops. People can ask any price they want. Doesn't make it worth that much.

I found a carved Buddhist Monk that is listed for $1850 and $2150 on various sites. Actual retail value is around $200-$300.

I also found a late 1800's Fontaine Durieux terracotta statue once that was listed for over 10k on one site. I found 2 other examples that sold for between $1500 and $2000. Like this one but finished with natural colors versus the bronze/gold..

My Dad brought one back from Asia over 50 years ago. We used it for a coffee table. :icon_thumleft:
