Hmm the rattle seems like an I idea but seems it would be awful heavy for a baby. It has a square hole in the bottom I'm thinking it was attached to something but it's not threaded.

It reminds me of the attachment that bee keepers fit on the end of a hand held smoke generator.

The handle part is quite heavy but the but bulb is pretty light but its all one piece it kinda has a bell characteristic to it I put a little piece of gravel in it, and it has a resonance. I don't think a toilet float would be decorative.

Purely speculation ..but .. could it be the flush pull (handle) off of an old high-tank toilet?

I was thinking it was a possibility but what I'm finding are similiar to a light pull.

I'm thinking it is horse related it was found in the roots of a tree in a stone wall not near a cellar hole or anything. I'm thinking pasture land along an old wagon rd. I'm not familiar with harnesses tack or carriage parts.

I am not familiar with ANY horse tack with a square shaft attachment, and the ONLY thing I know of with a square shaft that is remotely related to horses would be a buggy handle, but that isn't one of those either.

antique_federal_brass_andirons.jpg Arts-and-crafts-brass-ball-andirons-sheffield-candlesticks-016-675x900.jpg I'm thinking it's from an andiron. Like these Federal brass ball top andirons. That might also explain why it's bent and broken.
