I'm not broken up, but I found more than my share of broken relics. Broken pipes, broken ceramics, broken buckles, broken gun part, and my friend dropped my small two-part button on the tailgate and broke it in two (I glued it back).

It wouldn't bother me if mbcuce hadn't found so many things that were not broken.

Anyway, one of my favorite finds is the small axe-shaped leather ornament. I've found a lot of larger ornaments, but nothing small like this. At the other site I found a very well preserved pewter button. It was at the back of site where the property dropped off into a swamp. I guess the moist soil kept the pewter in good shape. That same area was not so good for the knee buckle, which was encrusted with dirt and minerals. I don't think I'll ever get it well cleaned.

The musket ball that I found is smaller than we usually find. I didn't measure it, but I suppose it could be a pistol ball.

Thanks for looking.

You found some decent stuff there! Congrats! It could be a pistol ball but more likely the buck from a buck and ball shot. They used to put 2 or 3 smaller balls in with the larger caliber musket ball to increase the chances of hitting the target.

Thanks, xcopperstax! I'm embarrassed to say that I did not know anything about "buck and ball." Now I'm interested.
I might get a good measurement of the diameter and post it under "what is it." Maybe someone will be able to say what it was.

Now that I look back at my own pictures, I wonder if the thing, that I called a two-part button, might actually be part of a cufflink. The shank looks more like the ones that were used on the 18th century cufflinks that I have found.

It's not really constructed like an actual two-part button. It just broke into two parts when my friend dropped it.

Nice weekend while I was working. Did the pewter button come from the southern spot? If so I have match to it from field.

No. The finds in the first picture are divided by site. Everything on the right is the Old Settlement. Found that button and the knee buckle in a low area of the woods. My glasses were wet but as I rubbed off the dirt I could see there was a raised design. Thought for sure it was military...

I'm curious about the leather ornament shaped like an ax head. There has to be some significance to that shape.

Been scratching my head on that shape(ax shaped object) could it have been a piece that would have held the "tongue" of an adjustable strap on say a rifle sling or equine related leather?

smallfoot , I found very similar ones in an issue of Maryland Archeology https://jefpat.maryland.gov/Documents/mac-lab/rivers-cofield-preliminary-study-17-18c-leather.pdf

It doesn't shed light on what the shape comes from, but it actually shows a leather fragment with the axe-shapes and domes stuck to it. The same article does show an example of the kind of strap tip that I think you are talking about, but it's a different shape.

Anyway, check out the link. It's pretty interesting.
