It is true. After all these years detecting, I had still not found a Shield Nickel, until last week. I was detecting an old church yard, with the church still standing. Someone obviously has hit the place, as I found only the Nickel and a 1919 Wheat, along with the Wolf Creek Ski Lodge pin. The church dated to 1890. The Nickel had so much crud on it, that I wasnt sure it was a Nickel when I dug it. Cleaned it off, then soaked in Olive Oil for a few days. I could start to see some detail but wanted to verify for sure so I soaked it in hydrogen peroxide. I know the pic isnt the best, because of the condition of the Nickel, but you can see the 5 on the reverse, and on the obverse I can see the olive branch with the Shield. I wont get a date off of it because of more crud, but I can at least identify it. Yes I knew the peroxide would turn it white, but I needed to know for sure what the coin was. Sorry, no insitu pics this time, as I was detecting in the rain.
