I've found one shield nickel in my life that was worn so smooth I could barely identify it. It was a very rare find for my area because finds here don't get much older than V-nickels. That's cool, congrats!

Great find. I have found one but you have to look at it for twenty minutes before you can tell what it is. Nice recovery.

if you look away before the 20 minutes is up, you'll have to start over. LOL

Nice find and congrats on your first one. That is a somewhat tough coin to find. I only have 2 of them in 30 some years of detecting. Both came from farm fields.

They don't seem to do well in the ground and the date seems to be first to go. I'm pretty sure it's 1869 but can't say 100 percent.

This was a 40 acre bean field about a mile away from nearest road. My buddy found his at a homesite on a gravel road. It was in beans also he found a capped bust dime there several years ago. We couldn't believe finding two at different spots on the same day.
