I agree that this is a musician's belt plate. I also agree that it could possibly be earlier, but I think 1850 to 1880 is a good guess to start. The plate is of the same styling as the Model 1855 Union Sword Belt plate with the Lyre instead of an Eagle (Union musicians were issued swords). I have two questions about your find... 1.) The color of the plate seems a bit "off." Is it brass? And my second question--Could we also see a photo of the back of the plate?

It is made of brass, and theres not much to see on the back except what looks like a piece of Iron that may have rusted off the back. (oh, and the little ding on the corner from my pick >:(*%!!$%&&!!!)

And thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!

Hmmm... Don't worry much about the pick. I wanted to see if the attachment was still on the back. Thought its shape might help with a date. Can you tell me if there is a number cast into the back? It would probably be here:

Ok. My hunch is that this plate is closer to the 1850's end of the scale than the 1880's end.

Wow! Thats unreal!
Especially for Utah because there wasnt alot (if any) Civil War era action around here.

I appreciate your help!

I totally agree with Buckleboys ID it looks more 1850's than 1880's after seeing the back. I have studied multiple civil war musician pics and have yet to find one with this exact buckle. It must be quite rare. Maybe a veteran drop being the state it was found in.

Very nice looking buckle, Great find. If you contact the people at Fort Douglas Museum in Salt Lake City. They may be able to help.

Outstand .....probably the "Buckle of the Year" if there were such a category here.
Should definitely be place in best finds. WTG TomB
