Greetings,

My son and I just started metal detecting. I think I found something worth asking about. A couple people on FB said this a horse halter buckle. Any thoughts? How does one go about finding the age?

Thank you,
Jeff Downs

It might help the experts (not me) identify it of you state where you found the buckle.

Good luck to you and your son on your new hobby.

Looks like an asymmetrical buckle. People like put exact dates on these based on books, but I simply call it earlier American colonial

I'm fairly certain that buckle is at least 200 years old and possibly quite a bit older. What state did you find it in?

Very nice buckle find, congratulations! :occasion14:

Welcome to the forum!

Sure looks like a buckle from the mid 1600's!

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard JeffDowns! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) - members may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...

2nd - I pulled this from another TN thread...

Thanks vpnavy! I never gave the buckles I've found much thought. Got to compare them to you pics here to get an idea of age.
