The column talks about Bowles Crossing.... 5 miles west of the city on the National Road.
Around my parts, 40 is known as the National Road. Yet 40 is a good deal away from Newport. Currently Newport is in Vermillion County, could there had been another town by that name way back when?
Dognose - It's hard to find exact info on Bowles Crossing. I read somewhere that it was named after someone named Bowles who had difficulty/accident while crossing a creek. So that area was nicknamed Bowles Crossing by the local people. The Railway that went from Brazil to Terre Haute also mentions Bowles Crossing. I'm currently checking old topography maps for a pond in that area where the shovel may have been thrown.
Using the mileage markers, Bowles Crossing Station is 1.4 miles East of Cloverland and ~1.2 miles West of Billtown. Each section on the map is 1 mile in length. The circled area would be my guess for Bowles Crossing area. The creeks NE of circle may be the actual crossing area. Topo map from 1950s.
