"Button Field" finally produces 1809 Half Cent!

I have not been back to this site for almost a year. It has produced many buttons in the past and today was no exception, with 6. I can only read the back mark on one, IMPERIAL STANDARD, but two have designs on the front. My oldest coins found there prior today's hunt were 1940's. This 1809 is my first Half Cent! It was only about 2 inches deep.

There is a ghost town nearby that was formed by freed slaves in or around 1812. It was a stop on the underground railroad. All of my buttons, as well as the Half Cent were found on a path leading from what appears to be a boat landing, leading up into the woods in the direction toward this village. I suspect this path was used by villagers trafficking escaped slaves.

I found the Whatizit on a spot where the path splits in two directions. Unfortunately I broke it while trying to remove it from some tree roots. It looks like a weathervane, but it is flat on one side and appears to have been finished smooth, with a rounded finish on the other. It also is lacking a place for mounting to a post. Any help with the ID is appreciated!

I'm almost positive that is the "West" arm of a weather vane.  Post would've been at the right side of the photo, with four arms outward at 90 degree angles and the letters "N," "S," "E," and "W" at the ends of the short arms. Perhaps the tip of the arrow on the left hand side, where the broken part of the "W" is?

GREAT FINDS!  That half cent is Awesome.

Cheers,

Buckles

What a great day for you! As collectible as weathervanes are, you should be able to find the type in some reference. Is it cast iron?

I'm still looking for that type of half cent. I have a beautiful Liberty cap 1794 with words "two hundred for the dollar" stamped on the SIDE of the coin. I also have a n1804 Draped bust in great shape but like I said I'm still looking for the Classic head. Great find.

Congrats Neil on the Half Cent, I cannot think of too many times when a Half Cent was found on our hunts that the same area almost always produced Large Cents, so keep pluggin away in that area. LOL, just thought of how this year I am ahead in Half Cents over Large Cent finds. Hopefully that will change today or by next week.

Nice finds, thanks for posting the pictures.

I once found a half cent, but it was a token. Your find is really neat.

Very Sweet Neil. I would love to find a half cent. I like your speculation on who lost it too. :) If only coins could talk.
