I agree with broken detector about it being a General service button. First issued in 1854. A version with a raised shield came out shortly after the war.

Looks like a regular Civil War general service button or a variant thereof

What’s the back mark on it? Steele and Johnson?

Sorry to have to say, your button appears to be a Reproduction of the 1854-1874 US Army Enlisted-man's button... made for use by civil war battle re-enactors.

Note that the loop's legs go into two separate holes instead of the usual one hole, the back is plain and flat as a tabletop, and the "edge crimp and foldover" on the sides is too wide and straight.

I didn't stop to think that it could be a reproduction. I knew something didn't look just right but figured it was just a variation with a blank back. I have learned something and hopefully I won't forget it.:laughing7:

Thanks all. That fits with my neighbors recollections that there used to be reenactments in our area. I'll still put it down as a cool find cuz he said it has been over 20 years since he heard of them doing it. I will attempt to mark this as solved though I don't know how ;)
