It is one piece and measures roughly 21mm. The backmark is Sherlock & Company London.

Good livery button. The “Sherlock & Co / Covent Garden / London” backmark dates between about 1845-1880.

The motto around the crest is “GRADATIM VINCIMUS” (We conquer by degrees) and used by several families including Browne, Curtis and Duke. I’m sure yours is for the Curtis family: a ram’s head surmounted by two branches of oak, although the branches extend further around the ram than on the drawing linked below (I’m using a link rather than giving the image for copyright reasons):
